The national football team Amavubi Stars arrived in Burundi yesterday afternoon ahead of the second leg of the preliminary round of the Africa Nations Championship set for tomorrow in Bujumbura.

The Amavubi Stars goes into tomorrow’s game with a 1-0 goal advantage over their rivals.

The Stars are expected to train today evening at Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium.

New coach Raoul Shungu will make his debut on Rwanda’s bench.

The winner between Burundi and Rwanda will face Sudan in the first round tie to be played on the weekend of May 2-4.

This new championship was inaugurated last September by Caf with the aim of providing home-grown talents more exposure on the international scene as well as promoting and developing football in Africa.

Elsewhere, in the East central zone, Tanzania booked a place for the first round of the African Nations Championships qualifiers with a 2-0 win over Kenya on Saturday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The Taifa Stars advanced on a 2-1 aggregate after losing the first leg of the preliminary tie by a lone goal in Nairobi a fortnight ago.

Substitute Jerry Tegete gave the hosts the lead after 76th minutes before Nadir Haroub struck the match winner in stoppage time to shatter the dream of the Harambee Stars.

The Taifa Stars will meet the Cranes of Uganda in the next round of the Central East Zone.

Uganda Cranes thrashed Eritrea 3-0 in their preliminary round, second-leg match in Kampala on Friday to qualify on a 5-3 aggregate.

Stephen Bengo scored just before half-time before Geoffrey Sserunkuma doubled the lead on 69 minutes.

Dan Wagaluka then netted an own-goal in the dying minutes to seal the win for Uganda.

In the Central zone, Zambia beat Swaziland 3-0 to progress through to the first round where they will now face Botswana.

The winners of each group will qualify for the final tournament, which will be held in Ivory Coast from February 22 to March 8 next year.
