The battle for the qualification for the World junior Championship set for July 8-13 in Bydgoszcz, Poland unfolds on April 20 with the interclub championships due in Muhanga, Southern Province.

The local athletics body, RAF has confirmed this development adding that the national junior team will be picked on the same day.

The body’s technical director, Emmanuel Murenzi said, "The junior athletes will be selected next weekend and the best will compose the national team.”

Sophia Kanakuze and Jean d’Arc Mukakigeri are some of the female athletes expected to spice up the event. There are several regional and continental junior championships lined-up this season, a motivation for the young runners to compete fiercely today and book their tickets.

First on the calendar is the Eastern Africa Junior Championships due next weekend in Djibouti. The biggest event for the juniors though this year is the World Junior Championships due July 8-13 in Poland.

In last year’s edition held in Czech Republic, Mukakigeri failed to go past the heat stages of the 400m thus winning no silverware for Rwanda at the world event.
