Editor,
Rwandans especially Genocide survivors have welcomed the decision by Canada to finally deport Leon Mugesera who is wanted for inciting masses to commit the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.
In the recent past, Mugesera’s former defence lawyer, Guy Bertrand, launched a media campaign, alleging that once the suspect is deported, he is likely to be tortured or killed by the Kigali government.
I know Rwanda is committed to conduct Mugesera’s trial in a manner that meets required standards. Reconciliation or the end of impunity can never be achieved if people who commit crimes go scot-free.
Mugesera fought his deportation for over 16 years. Though it took long, it is a strong message to other suspects still in hiding. Key genocide suspects like Félicien Kabuga, who is accused of bankrolling and participating in the genocide will one day be apprehended no matter how long it takes.
