Members of an Indian organization, Rwanda Malayalee Association, have donated an assortment of items to Mother Theresa orphanage ran by Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity.
The association that is made up of 160 Malayalee speaking people from the southern state of Kerala in India, donated rice, sugar, maize and wheat flour, milk powder, clothes and beddings.
In his address, the association’s chairman, Binoy Thomas, said the association will continue working with other partners to support more orphanages.
"As part of our outreach activities, we want to be actively involved in humanitarian works through working with those involved in this exercise,” Thomas stated.
The General Secretary of the association, Mathew Varghese, called upon members to work even harder to ensure the association benefits more people.
"We should be inspired by what we have managed to do and never underestimate it, but get focused to the mission,” he advised.
In appreciation, the Sister in Charge of the Orphanage, whose name is withheld as she is not allowed to speak to the media, welcomed the donation saying the adding that the centre has managed to move on through such support.
"We have been taking care of about 123 people, including children and the elderly, but some children were recently adopted,” she observed.
The centre takes care of abandoned children by providing them shelter and other necessities.
The late Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 in Kolkata, India. Her mission was to serve the poorest of the poor.
