NGOMA — Remains of 34 victims of the 1994 Genocide we were on Monday re-buried in Kibungo sector, Ngoma district of Eastern Province.

The burial was part of the 14th anniversary to commemorate the Genocide that claimed over a million lives. Over 16,000 bodies have so far been re-buried in the whole district since the genocide ended.

Speaking during the commemoration function at the district level, the head of cooperative societies in Eastern province, Jean Marie Vianney Makombe called upon the Genocide survivors to be calm and work hard.

He also warned residents who posses genocide ideologies saying that the government would deal with them. About 137 case of Genocide ideology were registered in the Eastern province and 14 of these in Ngoma district only.

He called for tight security for survivors and protection of memorial sites most especially in this week of Genocide commemoration where most offences in this category are registered.

The district mayor Francois Niyotwagira requested those who know whereabouts of the remains of victims to report them so that they can be officially re-buried.

He called upon the residents to fight for Genocide Ideology and give a deaf ear to those who are trying to take them astray as they fight for unity and reconciliation.

Niyotwagira called upon residents to give whatever little they can afford to help settle the survivors. About 120 houses for the Genocide survivors are under construction but funds are still the problem to accomplish them.

The IBUKA representative in Ngoma district Emmanuel Rutagendwa said: "Those who don’t want it (Genocide commemoration) have nothing to do other than succumbing to it.”
