RWAMAGANA — Valens Ntezirembo, the Mayor of Rwamagana District has called for calm during Genocide commemoration week.
Ntezirembo made the appeal on Monday at Kigabiro Sector during the official opening of the commemoration period in Rwamagana.
"A period like this is often characterized by throwing stone son the roofs of houses of genocide survivors. Sometimes the survivors are threatened to be killed. The aim is to antagonize the survivors and make them feel insecure,” Ntezirembo said.
The Mayor also added that such plans should be dropped immediately and called for calmness among the district residents.
Ntezirembo said it was every Rwandan’s responsibility to uproot genocide ideology and focus on development. He also appealed to residents to always turn up for evening talks on Genocide during the commemoration week.
The Mayor added that remembering is not meant for a particular group of people but for all Rwandans and that remembering should be part of culture, ‘for a purpose’.
He reminded the residents of the purpose of remembering saying it is because of the loss of one million Tutsi who were killed in 1994 genocide while all nations watched.
The Executive Secretary of Kigabiro Sector, Valérie Nsenga Rubibi, reminded residents of other genocide cases including that of the Jews.
He said that the planners of genocide brand the target group as useless and of no value and always concoct a reason for killing them.
Rubibi warned residents who still harbor genocide ideology to drop it. He called on residents to cooperate for the development of the nation.
