In a move to economically empower vulnerable families, Rwanda Red Cross (RRC) Friday donated goats and rabbits to residents of Nemba Sector, Gakenke District.

The donation benefited about 1,300 families.

RRC says the exercise will continue to other districts, among them Kamonyi, Ruhango, Nyanza, Karongi, Ngororero and Rulindo. Others are Rwamagana, Nyagatare, Ngoma, Bugesera and Nyarugenge

The Vice Mayor of Gakenke in charge of Social Affairs, Zephryn Ntakirutimana, commended RRC, saying the donation will improve residents’ income.

Speaking to Sunday Times, beneficiaries could not hide their excitement.

"I am very grateful for being selected to benefit from this donation,” said Viateur Kambari, one of the beneficiaries.

The head of RRC district committee, Faustin Nzabarinda, said his organization will continue working with local authorities in identifying more beneficiaries.

He pledged  RRC’s commitment to continue working with the government in promoting and supporting the welfare of the vulnerable, especially in rural areas.
