The new Egyptian leadership that assumed power after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak early last year, has expressed interest in strengthening relations with Rwanda.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, said this after his meeting with the Minister of Defence Gen. James Kabarebe on Thursday, in Kigali.
Amr disclosed that his country and Rwanda had agreed to strengthen military relations as part of a broad plan to strengthen bilateral relations.
"The current relations between Rwanda and Egypt are good, but we are boosting them by planning for further cooperation,” said Amr.
He added that the two countries take a lead in contributing to peacekeeping missions on the continent and found it vital to build closer bonds.
"Part of the areas of military cooperation includes training and capacity building. We have also invited General Kabarebe to visit Egypt as part of our cooperation drive,” Amr added.
According to the Army and Defence spokesperson, Col. Joseph Nzabamwita, Rwanda and Egypt currently enjoy good relations and are partners in peacekeeping missions.
Rwanda is part of the six Nile Basin countries that Amr was touring. According to sources, he was also supposed to meet the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Stanislas Kamanzi, but cut short his trip as he was called back home for urgent duties.
