Modern living has many advantages for men. But it has led people to many temptations which are also disturbing them, making them spend time and money on useless things while also spoiling their physical and mental health.
Modern living has many advantages for men. But it has led people to many temptations which are also disturbing them, making them spend time and money on useless things while also spoiling their physical and mental health.
For example, adolescents and teenagers stay up late in the night glued to internet or movies. They get up late in the morning, skip their breakfast or miss the mid day meal. This kind of routine damages their eye sight, nutrition as well as overall performance in studies. Similarly adults spend valuable hours on social network sites.
People smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol with impunity, knowing very well that it is harmful for health. People also gamble knowingly, losing money and prestige in the process.
Extra marital sex is something harmful by all means, yet many people indulge in such affairs.
The root cause of all these problems is that individuals succumb to their wrong desires. They have no control over their minds. Whatever the nature of a wish, one sets out to fulfil it as soon as possible.
The necessity for today is that people learn to overcome their minds, i.e. learn some self discipline.
The mind is something different from the anatomic physical white and grey matter of the brain. It is that which governs the thought process, desires and impulses of an individual. People who give in to their impulses and desires every time, waste precious time in frivolous or harmful activities and spend valuable resources indiscriminately. They are often not successful as per their potential in their respective fields. This often makes them frustrated but either they do not realize the cause of their problems or even after realization they make no efforts to overcome their wrong desires. Sometimes half-hearted attempts are made, which yield no fruitful results. After some time the efforts are given up, thinking, "I cannot give this up”.
But this is not a good thought. It is difficult but not impossible to tame the mind.
All that is needed is one should be determined to do so. A person should have a clear concept as to what are his priorities in life. This will help him to decide as to what is important and that should be done first. Something which is not important for one’s work or life or family should be the last priority in the day. Even if not done, (like if television not watched for one evening), it should not be deemed important in any way.
Similarly one should be clear about his personal likes and dislikes and their utility in life. If an individual is fond of junk food and knows very well that it will not provide him any nutrition, he should try to discard this habit and eat nutritious meals more in quantity howsoever unpalatable it may seem. This is more important for teenagers as the demand for nutrients is increased in a growing body. If this demand is not fulfilled at this stage, one can suffer from weakness and multiple deficiencies later in life.
People fond of alcohol and or smoking while knowing their harmful effects, should question themselves as to why they continue to do so. What they gain is just a few minutes of physical pleasure. But little do they realize that in lieu of this pleasure, they are losing their money as well as health. One should make efforts to conquer his mind, otherwise, the physical senses and lowly impulses mostly take over, which tend to pull a person towards the lower side. One who has conquered his mind can never be dictated by his senses. Such a person always rises up in life above others.
It is truly said, one who can conquer his mind can conquer the world.
