Early this week, it was also confirmed that this year’s Senior Challenge Cup edition would be held in the Kenyan city of Kisumu.
According to the regional body’s Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, the move to stage the tournament in the coastal town of Tanzania is partly down to the success of last year’s Challenge Cup.
Besides staging a colourful tournament, Cecafa were also impressed by the fact that Tanzania managed to secure sponsorship for the tournament at the 11th hour.
Zanzibar and Sudan had been touted as potential hosts but the move fell through because of lack of funds.
In last year’s Kagame Cup, three time champions APR and Etincelles were knocked out at the group stage. Yanga edged Simba in an all-Tanzania final to gift Sam Timbe a fourth Kagame Cup title after triumphs with SC Villa (2005), Police (2006) and Atraco (2009).
Ghana's Kenneth Asamoah was the hero after coming off the bench to head home the winner deep into extra time.
Since 2002, President Paul Kagame has footed the tournament’s $60,000 prize money.
