I read with awe the story of a pastor who allegedly defrauded over 290 vulnerable students in yesterday’s issue of The New Times. This is indeed an evil act as members of the clergy must always be beyond reproach at all times.

I have realised that some people use the name of God for self-aggrandisement with some church ministers in the past causing untold suffering to their followers.

What is most annoying is that the pastor targeted vulnerable students who looked up to him as their saviour. This is not the first time I have heard of such cases involving the so-called pastors who use the Almighty’s name to defraud unsuspecting worshippers. However, this does not mean all pastors are crooks. However, the few who have committed crimes have tainted the House of God.

Otherwise, who would ever listen to such pastors preach against evil, yet they practice it? Who would ever help the poor when pastors who are supposed to take the lead in solving social-economic woes facing the masses are the very ones who swindle the poor?
