Editor,

Allow me through your newspaper to comment on an article appeared in The New Times, January 7, titled "Pubic servants to get pay rise.” Employees who excel must be rewarded and those who don’t perform to expectations must be penalised.

Since 2006 when the salary structure for civil servants was set up, the cost of living has kept going up. This implies that employees have to dig deeper into their pockets to cater for the basic needs.

The Ministry of Public Service and Labour has therefore done the right thing to propose a salary increment.

It is also laudable for the ministry to reduce salary imbalances among civil servants.

Many have in the past complained about salary imbalances. Its good news that something is being done.
