GATSIBO-Prosecutors at Nyagatare District Intermediate Court have proposed 5-year prison sentences for eight students accused of stealing school materials worth millions of francs.

Last year, eight students from Muhura Secondary School in Gatsibo district were arrested over allegedly stealing equipment belonging to the school’s ICT department.

According to prosecutors, the suspects stole computers, digital cameras, ultra antenna and other unspecified equipment.

"Though some stolen materials were found and returned to the school, it doesn’t nullify the offence they committed,” a State Prosecutor told the court during the hearing.

Prosecution went on to argue that it was a serious offence because the accused first forged a key to open the building where the material was kept.

However, legal assistants for the accused students requested prosecution to consider article 9 that provides for the rights of children facing charges, before the official hearing scheduled on the 20th January 2012.
