BUGESERA - Local leaders in Bugesera district have been called upon to get closer to the community if they want to excel in good governance.
The call was made Thursday by the Eastern Province Executive Secretary, Jean Marie Vianney Makombe, during a one-day visit to Bugesera district.
Addressing residents of Ruhuha, Nyarugenge and Kamabuye sectors, as part of the ongoing month-long Good Governance campaign, Makombe told local leaders that they should take the responsibility of getting closer to the people and solve their problems.
"If you get closer to the people and solve their problems on time and exchange ideas, there is no way you can’t excel in good governance. The rest of the problems left unsolved should immediately be taken to courts,” he said.
Makombe commended Bugesera residents for championing development in the district by excelling in projects like farming and many others.
"You very well remember how this district used to be severely affected by drought. This was a big threat to the country, but through your efforts, you have made hunger a thing of the past,” he said.
He however went on to urge residents to be committed in the development of the district by resisting corruption.
"Corruption comes in many ways…sometimes it is in the form of gifts. You should resist all forms of corruption to keep the good image of the district,” he noted.
The district Mayor, Louis Rwagaju commended residents for registering 82% success in accessing health insurance.
Most of the problems addressed by local residents include land disputes and development projects like electrification, among others.
