The Vice Mayor of Gasabo District in charge of Social Affairs, Marie Louse Uwimana, Friday called upon residents of Kimihurura Sector to utilize Umurenge Sacco in fighting poverty.

She made the remarks during a meeting organized by Kigali City in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government to promote good governance.

"The number of residents saving with Umurenge Sacco in this area is too low compared to what is expected. This project was initiated to support you financially, but unless you show commitment, you may not benefit,” Uwimana said.

She expressed concern over families which have not been cooperative in adopting Mutuelle de santé, adding that a special team will be set up to check and follow the issue in all homes.

The meeting which also aimed at educating residents about the need to participate in and promote government programmes, saw local leaders respond to issues affecting residents.

Among others, residents were concerned by the timing of Kimichanga expropriation exercise saying it will affect children going to nearby schools as they will not be able to continue schooling from their new locations.

However, the vice Mayor said that according to the law, residents will be given a grace period of three months after compensation which started last week.

She also promised that local authorities will work with parents connect children to various schools.
