The only two mobile clinic vehicles in the country have greatly helped boost health care services in remote areas, according to the Head of Surgery Department at Rwanda Military Hospital.
In an interview with The New Times, Maj. Dr. King Kayondo, said the mobile clinics have to date been used during the special outreach service week conducted late last year in November.
"We used the vehicles during the outreach week when we were able to offer treatment to 525 people in just a week. We had a team of specialists on board who ably offered quality medical care to the people of Runda,” Kayondo noted.
He observed that due to the team of specialists on board, the quality of service offered is comparable to that of referral hospitals, thereby reducing transfers to regional referrals.
Kayondo disclosed that they plan to visit Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts due to their remoteness. The two mobile clinics, each worth over Rwf 200 million, are a donation from the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare.
Both vehicles have modern equipment that includes an Electro cardiograph to conduct heart examinations, an auto clave to sterilise medical equipment, an ultra sound to check internal organs of the body, refrigerator and an operating table, among other equipment.
One of the vehicles is also equipped with a chest X-ray.
The Director General of Health Communication Centre, Arthur Asiimwe, said plans are underway to increase the number of mobile clinic vehicles this financial year.
