NYAGATARE-Nyagatare District Advisory Council Wednesday adopted a Rwf 8.171 billion supplementary budget for the 2011/2012 fiscal year, which ends in June.

The new budget saw an increase of over Rwf1billion compared to the previous district’s estimated revenues.

According to the council president, Alcade Kamanzi, the additional money will come from health insurance, health centres and land taxes.

"This budget was first proposed six months ago and the money will largely be spent on development projects in the district,” he said.

The advisory council president added that more taxes will be generated from newly constructed markets in the district.

"For instance, we have a newly completed modern market in Rukomo sector. We expect high tax income from the market that will finance our budget.”

The District Executive Secretary, Mary Kantengwa said that the new budget reflects funds that will be contributed towards the Eastern Province Investment Corporation (EPIC) that is charged with the proposed construction of a hotel in Nyagatare District.

"We agreed to contribute Rwf 30 million towards EPIC to construct a hotel in the district. We also considered construction of Karangazi Valley Dam in this financial year,” she revealed.

The advisory council meeting assessed the progress of performance contracts where tremendous steps were taken, especially in the agricultural sector.

However, the meeting recognised slow progress in biogas installation in various parts of the district.

The Mayor, Fred Atuhe Sabiiti, said: "Of the 110 houses to be installed with biogas, only 26 are fully installed. There is an urgent need to mobilise residents on the good use of biogas and request financial institutions to help them”.
