Government’s initiative to set targets for sports associations to make Rwanda a top sporting country is the best thing that happened to our youth. Sport today is big business that runs into billions of dollars. However, Rwandan sports have been on their knees hence wasting a lot of our talented youth.
All this has been caused by lack of will and disorganisation among our sports federations. The recent government announcement is therefore a path towards bringing sanity and order in our sports before professionalising the administrative structures of sport associations and clubs as well as playing units. Our talented youth would have better income as sport progressively become a big employer. However, the government cannot do everything alone and needs our backing. Thus, my appeal is to the private sector to prop up the government’s intervention especially through sponsorship and investment.
Although gains may not be immediate, long term benefits though better organisation of sports would be evident from the grassroots to the topmost levels. As a sports lover, I am willing to pay as much to watch good soccer, basketball or even volleyball.
