Esperance Ineza, a resident of Rwamagana in the Eastern Province, who gave birth from Hopital La Croix Du Sud at Gisimenti, was one of the few women that started off the first day of the year, 2012, with a newborn healthy baby.
"I am so excited to celebrate my New Year with a baby. For me, it’s a double blessing that I have made it to the New Year and given birth to my first born on the first day of the year,” Ineza said.
The father of the baby, Philippe Ruramirwa Rusine, who was at the hospital keeping an eye on his son and wife, couldn’t hold hide excitement.
He said he was contemplating naming him Janvier (January) since there was no name to mean first day of the year.
Muhima Hospital registered the highest number of births on New Year, with four girls and three boys.
The coordinator of nurses at Muhima Hospital, Jeannette Umutoni, said that she was delighted with the number of babies that were born yesterday.
She said she was also glad to be working on the first day of the year, stressing that it’s her duty and calling to help mothers give birth.
King Faisal only had one baby born (a girl) on the first day of the year 2012.
Attempts to get the number of children born at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) were futile as the person in charge refused to disclose the number, saying that the media should wait until the next day.
