KIREHE – The new governor of the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, has commended Kirehe District for its development strides in various areas.

She was speaking at the end of her familiarization tour of the Eastern Province.

Accompanied by province and district officials, the governor toured Nasho irrigated maize valley, a community innovation centre, as well as Munini Model farm in Muhama Sector.

Uwamariya said that the main purpose of her visit was to witness development projects in the district and to meet with grassroots and opinion leaders to discuss how they can jointly work together to develop the province.

She commended Kirehe leaders for their efforts in implementing development projects.

"I was impressed with the way the Kirehe District is green, and for your maize production… this shows the commitment of every leader and it is an indication that the province is growing into a role model,” she said.

She challenged local leaders to continue promoting the culture of forming team spirit at various levels and pledged her support.

The district Mayor, Protais Murayire, highlighted challenges the district faces such as  cannabis trafficking and severe dry seasons that, in most cases, destroy crops.

He, however, added that there have been measures put in place like mobilizing residents to apply irrigation farming methods.

Later in the day, the governor met opinion leaders and urged them to actively contribute towards the construction of 12-year-basic education classrooms.
