Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on citizens to have discipline during the ongoing festive season.
The call was made by ACP Emmanuel Butera, the Commissioner for Operations and Public Order, who observed that while some people are away to celebrate Christmas and New Year festivities, others take the opportunity to break into houses.
As regards road safety, the Police has laid concrete mechanisms to contain drunk driving.
Emphasizing discipline, Butera said that a few days ago, a UN official left his vehicle open with the ignition inside and it was driven off by a houseboy, later this vehicle crashed in Rulindo on the Kigali-Ruhengeri highway.
He attributed this accident to carelessness of the vehicle’s owner.
According to a traffic police report released early this month, 4,078 accidents were registered in the last 11 months and 355 deaths recorded between January and November.
On whether the increased numbers of vehicles in the country could be the possible cause for road accidents, Butera instead attributed the accidents to lack of discipline among road users.
"The increase of vehicles should rather be a signal for discipline to every road user.”
