The remaining children at the Mpore-PEFA orphanage in Nyarugunga Sector, Kicukiro District, will by February been reunited with their families, the Country Director of Hope and Homes for Children, Claudine Nyinawagaga, announced.
Since the beginning of this year, the NGO, working with the Gender Ministry, embarked on a programme to identify and reunite children with their families.
"The orphanage had 50 children before, but currently, there are only eighteen remaining. We now have clear information about their families,” said Nyinawagaga.
She made the remarks during a Christmas party the NGO organized for children, both in the orphanage and those reunited with their families.
According to her, a big number of those reunited are in their real families adding that it was also observed that many children in orphanages aren’t orphans but rather have simply been abandoned by their parents.
Speaking during the event, the Mayor of Kicukiro district, Jules Ndamage, stressed the need for children to grow up in their families.
"Even if there might be a possibility of providing for children in orphanages, there is a very big difference in terms of behavior between children brought up in orphanages and those raised at home,” Ndamage said.
