"The journey to this sector was shortened as a result of this road. The last time I was here, it was in such a pathetic state,” Mutijanwa recollected.
She hailed Nyamasheke District authorities for the formulation and implementation of diverse programmes that improve the standard of living among residents.
The road was repaired through funds donated by RPAGE, an organisation in charge of road construction and environmental protection that operates in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
"Please take good care of this road, use it to develop this area,” urged Yohan Damascene Shyirambere, the organisation’s co-ordinator.
Residents interviewed by The New Times welcomed the new road constructed at a cost of Rwf 206 million.
"The condition of roads can determine whether farmers make loses or profits. Prices are usually determined by the demand, yet without good roads to the rest of the districts, the only consumers remain our neighbours,” remarked Fabien Bakundukize, a farmer.
Another resident, Safi Habyarimana, noted that since the construction of the road, farmers in Karengera are able to transport abundant egg plants, tomatoes and bananas to the district.
