The Mayor of Kayonza District, John Mugabo, has called upon all Rwandans to work hard towards peace and unity to attain sustainable development.

He said this Tuesday when 40 members of the Rwandan Diaspora paid a courtesy call on Abiyunze Association, a group made up of Genocide widows and perpetrators in Gahini Sector, Kayonza District.

"Working together and supporting each other is the only way to achieve our goals,” Mugabo noted, urging residents to come up with income generating activities, which he said, would enable the country to fight against poverty.

The Executive Secretary of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC), Dr Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, commended the Association for its efforts in promoting unity and reconciliationas well as measures they had put in place to alleviate poverty.

"Abiyunze has been a living example that demonstrates that when we unite, we can achieve anything. The government will also continue to work hard to help people improve their living standards,” Habyarimana stated.

Emmanuel Karekezi, a Rwandan living in Australia, donated a total of Rfw 300,000 to the association hailing it and the country at large for the tremendous steps taken towards achieving peace and reconciliation.

"Given the terrible experiences Rwandans have had in the past decades; no one would have ever imagined that Rwanda would be where it is today,” he said.

Christine Inezawho lives in Zambia, also commended the population’s contribution to peace, not only within the country, but also abroad.

"As Rwandans living abroad, we will also work together to promote love and bring along new ideas to strengthen our society,” she stated.

On the same day, the group visited and interacted with the residents of a model village located in Mukarange Sector, where they inspected low cost houses valued at an estimated Rwf 5million each, as well as community livestock rearing projects. The village boasts of electricity and a road network.
