KARONGI- Local authorities in Karongi District yesterday rounded up 50 street children and sent them to Bwakira Rehabilitation Centre located in the same area.
According to the Mayor, Bernard Kayumba, the move is aimed at reducing chaos in the town.
"It was agreed to create a transit centre in at least each district so as to reduce the number of homeless and idle street children,” he said.
Kayumba noted that it was usually such people who turn into criminals stressing that the operation to get them off the streets was a continuous process.
The mayor further explained that the tourism sector in the district would not be compromised due to threats posed by increasing number of street children.
"The district is famous for its prestigious tourist attractions and we shall not allow idlers to undermine our efforts of transforming Karongi into a model metropolis,” said he.
