KAYONZA - The Governor of the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, yesterday launched the Beautification Week in Kayonza District, calling upon local leaders to improve cleanliness around the district.

The week-long campaign was launched in Mukarange Sector, where residents joined provincial and district officials in cleaning Kayonza town centre.

"Implementing cleanliness should be everyone’s responsibility, right from the village level to every part of the district,” she said, calling on all schools, hospitals, churches, commercial centres and other government institutions in the district to participate in the ongoing tree planting campaign in the district and province as a whole.

The Mayor of Kayonza, John Mugabo, pointed out that the district begun the campaign by planting trees around the town’s suburbs, trading and health centres.

"We started the campaign by sensitising residents from the village to the district level…urging them to join us in the campaign. And it has been successful,” he noted.

A resident of Kayonza town, Xavier Maniriho, welcomed the move but requested authorities to seek a lasting solution to the prevailing water shortage in the district.

"We are very glad that the Governor has joined us in the campaign, but we also request you to solve the pressing water shortage in this district,” he pleaded.
