NYAMASHEKE - Mahembe Sector, in Nyamasheke is undertaking a three month anti-AIDS campaign.
Under the theme, "Youth let’s join hands to protect our lives against the HIV/AIDS virus, for the better of our future,” it targets to encourage the youth to voluntarily test for HIV.
It is part of the countrywide campaign that started on December 1, to fight the disease.
"This period should be characterised by self evaluation on how we conduct ourselves regardoing HIV/AIDS infection. Are we protecting our selves so we can have a better future free of the virus”? wondered Gabriel Mutuyimana, Executive Secretary of the sector.
The youth were called upon to shun cross generation sex and set positive targets for their future.
People were also called upon to abstain, be faithful to their sexual partners or use condoms.
"You should take HIV/AIDS as a personal problem that can affect anyone. This will help curb further infections,” advised Vestine Mukanoheli, the co-ordinator for Impuhwe Zimana, an anti-AIDS co-operative that operates in Mahembe.
Youth reported that shyness and little information about the use of condoms accounts for unprotected sex.
