Dear editor,

Can I please express my concern over the issue of Ingando among the teachers? We are very grateful that this is coming up. However, I think the approach was harsh and unrealistic especially to mothers with very young babies and pregnant ones. I have the following questions;

Were there any consultations made, before this? If so, does the gender minister approve pregnant women taking part in this ingando? Do these women have any rights protecting them? What about the women who can’t abandon their little ones and would rather lose jobs? I am sure most mothers could do that, than see their babies starve or die of hunger-(think about it mothers). We are supposed to breast feed our babies for at least 6 months according to the ministry of health, and world health organization set standards.

What happens if a heavy mother hurts the unborn while in those trainings (mchamuchaka)? Has this been thought about?

In all the idea of ingando for teachers is ideal, but let the concerned authorities try as much a s possible and address the above concerns.

Remember that Rwanda is credited world wide for having the best policies that promote gender. Please don’t take this credit away!
