Rwandans living in Uganda will next week join their brothers and sisters in mourning the victims of the 1994 Genocide. A memorial ceremony organized by the Rwandan Embassy in Uganda will be held at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Monday.

"All  Embassies of Rwanda commemorate the 1994 Genocide from the 7th to 13th April mainly because we have to continue reminding the world that genocide took place in Rwanda and that some of perpetrators are still at large and continue to misinform the world about what happened,” said Rwanda’s Ambassador to Uganda, Ignatius Karegesa.

"We use this time as an opportunity to give accurate information and facts about the 1994 Genocide and what really happened in our country,” Karegesa told The New Times in Kampala this week.

"We must demonstrate to the outside world that the current Government and the Rwandan people have not failed in their healing and recovery process. We have properly managed the effects of the Genocide in areas of justice, unity, reconciliation and reconstruction.

"As we commemorate the Genocide, we are emphasizing that it should never happen again in Rwanda or elsewhere in the world. And we should fight genocide ideology and people who continue to perpetrate it, remembering that it is our moral obligation to protect and uplift the welfare of survivors,” he said.

Karegesa will deliver the keynote address at that function to be held under this year’s theme of "Let’s commemorate Genocide while fighting its ideology, rendering support to survivors and striving for development.”

Several Ugandan Government officials are expected to attend the ceremony. Apart from speeches, the occasion will also include the screening of a movie on Genocide. An estimated one million Rwandans died in the Genocide.
