A saree or sari is simply a long length of fabric that’s worn elegantly wrapped around the body. One end of the material is richly decorated. It’s usually worn pleated and pinned over the shoulder, draping down the back. It can also be worn open over the shoulder and draped over the arm.

A special blouse that bares the midriff and a petticoat are worn under the sari. As the saree is wrapped around the body, the material is tucked tightly into the petticoat so it doesn’t fall down. No pins are needed. The blouse can be purchased separately, although quality saris do come with an attached piece of blouse material. This is taken to a tailor who will hem the sari and make the blouse to size.

If you are planning to buy a saree for the first time, there are a few things you should consider. Before you hit the road, identify what event they are for and which colour you prefer. This may all change once you get to the store, but get start thinking before you go the shop. It will save a lot of time and indecision later.

Then consider your size, women who are on the heavy side should buy Chiffon or Crepe fabric sarees; also heavy Mysore silk sarees help one look thinner.

The printing of the sarees also matters a lot. Short women should wear sarees that have narrow or no borders, this will help them not look huge and the women will definitely look taller than their original height.

Girls or young women who are thin should get Cotton and Tissue sarees, these appear to be fluffy and give voluminous appearance so the thin body sets well with the starched type fabric.

Sarees should be worn according to the event. That is, if it’s for office or any other formal event, you should see simple floral printed sarees. The paisley prints also look good and soft in such places. Remember, sarees are meant to give sophisticated look, thus select sarees with delicate work on them.

Taking care

Never machine wash a sari. A sari should be either delicately hand washed or dry cleaned. Do not bundle and keep wet for a long time, in case of stains, wash with cold water immediately. For hard stains get the sari dry cleaned. While ironing, keep the iron in medium or low heat. lastly, store sarees in a cool dry place. With proper care and attention, silk sarees can be preserved for ages without losing their lustre or freshness.
