NYAMASHEKE – Teachers in Nyamasheke District have been called in to fight against gender based violence, child labour and other forms of child abuse. The call was made at a training workshop organized by the district, aimed at reminding teachers of their pivotal role in society.

More than 200 primary and secondary school teachers from Kagano and Bushekeri sectors participated.
"Teachers are opinion leaders and influence many people in their respective residences. Many people look up to them as role models; it’s important that they lead exemplary lives in their communities,” the mayor, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, said at the end of the workshop.
Teachers vowed to instil discipline and a culture of time management among pupils to help improve education performance in schools.
They hailed the nine-year basic education programme, saying it had helped improve school enrolment.
"This training means a lot as far as our work is concerned,” said one of the teachers, Felix Musonera.
