Police to beef up patrols at porous borders

NYAGATARE-The Governor of the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya has said that more Police personnel will be deployed near porous borders to prevent illegal influx of illicit drugs.

She made the remarks during a press interview on Nyagatare Community Radio.

"Fighting illicit drugs is among the resolutions that were taken during the recently concluded national security meeting. We shall soon deploy police at various porous borders to stem out illicit drugs entering the province,” she said.

Nyagatare District has been a route for illicit drugs entering the province from neighbouring Uganda.

The Regional Police Commander (RPC) of the Eastern Province, ACP Sam Karemera, said that within three months, Police will be deployed under the "Border Police” Programme.

He added that not only will police be in charge of the border, but they will also assist night patrols to maintain security.
