If the national football team, Amavubi Stars, beat Uganda and win this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, it will be an achievement worth celebrating.

Not because the competition means a lot to the country and her people, but because it has been a long time  since the team last won the tournament.

Rwanda won her first and only (to date) regional title 11 years ago when ‘Rwanda B’ beat Kenya’s Harambee  Stars in the 1999 final match at Amahoro national stadium.

Many had ruled them as non-contenders. But, here they are in the final with only 90 minutes standing in their way to a deserved title and an end to another year of waiting.

Today’s final is a repeat of the 2003 and 2009 finals which Amavubi Stars ended up losing. But we hope for a change in fortunes this time round.

Amavubi went into the tournament as under dogs. However, they have grown from strength to strength as the

competition progressed and will highly rate their chances of upsetting the Uganda Cranes, which is seeking
to win their 12th title.

The match against Uganda will be the ultimate test of character for not only Amavubi players and their coaching staff, but the fans as well.
