Local government officials from the Ugandan district of Kitgum hope to learn from Rwanda’s reconstruction
and transformation process, following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Led by the district’s LC 5 chairman, Luka Nyeko, the delegation yesterday toured Rulindo district to
witness the various projects that have facilitated the development process.
They toured several development projects in the district which included health facilities, Genocide
memorial sites and agricultural cooperatives.
"It’s just incredible to see such transformation, achieved in a short period and we hope to emulate several
strategies used here,” Nyeko said.
"Our district and Rwanda have a common history of conflicts. That is why we decided to visit so as to share
experiences in peace building, conflict mitigation as well as discuss Rwanda’s post 1994 Genocide recovery
and development strategies,” he added.
Addressing the delegation, Rulindo District Mayor, Justus Kangwagye, attributed the transformation to good
leadership.
Kitgum District is located in northern Uganda, a region that was characterized by atrocities caused by
rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army for over 20 years.
