I read with approval the nomination of Prof. Sam Rugege as the new Supreme Court president to replace Chief Justice Madam Aloysia Cyanzaire whose mandate expires this month.

Prof. Rugege has been instrumental in the judicial reforms process that has taken place over the last decade.

Rwanda’s judiciary has come a long way. The number of judges has increased significantly and the huge backlog of cases has been worked on.

As the Deputy Chief Justice, Prof. Rugege has been pivotal in overseeing this transformation alongside Cyanyaire. I would also like to commend the outgoing Chief Justice for a job well done.

Besides being the first female topmost judge in the country, Madam Cyanzaire has left behind a commendable legacy.
