MEDDIE Kagere took his goal tally to three in four games after scoring the winner in yesterday’s breathtaking Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup quarter-final clash against Zanzibar in Dar es Salaam.

With time running out and tension rising on the Amavubi bench, the striker, who plays for Police FC in the Primus League, stepped up to the plate with what should be a contender for goal of the tournament to give Rwanda a hard-earned 2-1 win over a battling Zanzibar side and a place in the last four.

It was by far Milutin Micho’s toughest game of the campaign and certainly gave him and his side a glimpse of what’s to come.

Zanzibar, who only sneaked into the last eight by virtue of a superior goal difference, dominated majority of possession throughout the 90 minutes and had kept Amavubi’s center-backs Eric Gasana and Ismail Nshutiyamagara on their toes the whole time.

After a number of half chances, Rwanda finally broke the deadline through Jean Baptist Mugiraneza a.k.a Migi’s powerful header. But the lead was short-lived as substitute Mohd Abdulrahman equalized just seconds into the second half.

Rwanda will now play Sudan who had a rather easier route to the semi-finals after a well-deserved 2-0 victory over a disjointed Burundi side.

Amir Ramei Abdelnabi and Mohammed Musa scored either side of half time. Abdelnabi opened the scoring on the 41st after heading home a right wing cross. Burundi pressed hard after the break but it was the desert hawks who doubled their advantage as Musa picked the ball in the box, beat his marker before converting from close range.

Action continues this afternoon when record champions Uganda entertain Zimbabwe in a lunch-time kick-off game. The last quarter-final tie pits defending champions Tanzania against three-time champions Malawi.
