Shyness is an emotion that affects how a person feels and behaves around others. Shyness can mean feeling uncomfortable, nervous, timid or insecure. People who feel shy sometimes even get speechless, some shaky or even become breathless.
When we are around other people, we become extremely sensitive to what we are doing, as if we have been put on centre stage. This creates nervousness and makes us question our every move. Our focus centres on ourselves and particularly on what we think, we are doing wrong. Some teens take this so far that they do not think they ever do anything right!
Shy kids often hesitate before trying something new. They often prefer watching others before joining in on a group activity. They usually take longer to warm up to new people and situations.
However, this should not be the case. Though shyness does not easily "go away,” it can be managed, but before you embark on the task of fighting it, first, you have to know that we all have unique qualities and different ways of expressing ourselves.
Many people want to reduce their shyness. However, shy people also have gifts that they might not appreciate in themselves. For example, because shy people may prefer listening to talking, they sometimes become good listeners—what friend doesn’t appreciate that?
Anyway, the first thing you have to do if you want to overcome shyness is to note the situations that make you feel shy and hole you back. The next time you are in this situation, do something just a little bit more outgoing than you would normally do; smile, make eye contact, ask a question, and see what happens.
As you expose yourself to new things, you will overcome your shyness. Try to be a good listener. If you concentrate hard on what the other person is saying, it could keep you from getting too far into your own head and you will feel more engaged in the moment. Remember if you want something so much, you will overcome anything to get it.
