The national soccer side has put up a sterling performance in the ongoing CECAFA challenge cup in Dar es Salam. Amavubi, Friday, qualified for the quarter finals of the regional football tournament at the top of Group B, beating Djibouti 5-2.
A couple of months ago the national side was eliminated from the Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. Its poor performance then, created a sense of despondence among football fans, who thought it would be long before the team is revived to achieve glory for the country.
Though its performance, so far in CECAFA, is not conclusive, its abilities in the tournament which is still ongoing, is evidence that more efforts have been added to ensure that the Amavubi perform to expectations.
The recent changes in the squad, with a new coach, and a new administration at FERWAFA, should inspire hope that change for the better is on course.
It is important that all football enthusiasts and the rest of the country throw their support behind the national team.
It should be borne in mind that corporate support through sponsorship is vital in the development of soccer in the country.
There is no lack of talent. But there is limitation in the development of that talent. That is why sometimes, the national side performs below expectations in spite of abundant promise. Football development can not be left to government. Sponsorship from the corporate world is also critical and Amavubi performance and promise should inspire that.
