RUHANGO - Five persons including a pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church have been arrested in connection with the theft of 10 machines meant for the One Laptop Per Child programme. The pastor was identified as Evariste Haiyambere, 65. But the names of the other suspects were not readily available.
According to police, the laptops were stolen in August from Groupe Scolaire Mutima, in Ntongwe sector, Ruhango district by a19-year old student identified as Edward Munyanbugingo.
The student later handed some of the machines to pastor Haiyambere to find market for the items, police said.
Upon arrest, Haiyambere admitted his involvement, saying that he was given the responsibility of securing market for the stolen laptops.
"I helped the boys to hide stolen property and I was supposed to look for a buyer, but I was arrested in the process,” the grey haired religious leader and senior citizen said.
Ruhango Police Commander, CIP Jules Rutayisire, said five of the ten laptops have been recovered in the operation and search for the remaining machines is underway.
Two of the laptops were recovered from Busoro, in Nyanza districtwhile three were recovered from in Ntongwe and Kinazi sector, in Ruhango district.
The five suspects were handed over to the Muhanga prosecution yesterday.
