THE national cycling federation (Ferwacy) is set to introduce monthly competitions to keep riders in perfect shape for international competitions.

The move comes after another failed attempt to win the prestigious Tour of Rwanda which climaxed on Sunday.

The national cycling calendar has been having four events but Ferwacy president Aimable Bayingana believes it’s time to triple that number.

"We are soliciting for sponsorship to help us stage monthly competitions,” he said before adding, "And I can confirm that there is already one lined up for next month (December).”

"Our riders need to race more to keep in shape for high profile competitions.”

Nathan Byukusenge, Rwanda’s best ranked rider after finishing fourth in the tour, concurs with Ferwacy about increasing the number of competitions.

"We do a lot of training but that’s not enough. We need more competitions under our belt,” Byukusenge said.
