RWANDA raced into the last eight of the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup after trouncing Zimbabwe yesterday. The wasps outmuscled Zimbabwe’s Warriors with a 2-0 win in the first of two Group A matches played at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Meddie Kagere, who has become a regular in the side, scored either side of half time to take his tally to three goals in five international caps.

Similar to their opening game against Tanzania, Amavubi had a slow start but gradually took control of the game. Mid-way through the first half, Kagere, who plays for Police FC in the Primus National League, put the wasps ahead with a left-footed strike from 25-yards out which beat Zimbabwe goalkeeper George Chigova.

After the break, Milutin Micho’s side kept their foot on the accelerator with back to back counter-attacks and finally got their reward on the 81st minute when Kagere launched onto a Jerome Sina shot at the face of Zimbabwe’s goal to double the lead. Two minutes from time, the striker could have sealed a hat-trick but shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. The win maintains Amavubi’s feel-good factor ahead of their final group match against Djibouti, who suffered a 3-0 mauling against the rejuvenated Kilimanjaro Stars yesterday.

Thomas Ulimwengu and Mwinyi Kzimoto gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead at half-time, before Yusuph Rashid added the gloss to the win in the second half.

Rwanda top the group with six points followed by defending champions Tanzania and Zimbabwe with three points apiece. Football fans are in for a thrilling contest when Zimbabwe and Tanzania face-off in a winner takes-it-all contest this Friday.

Meanwhile, Rwanda is striving to end a trophy drought stretching back to 1999.
