I read with utter dismay reports in regional media that Sudan had ordered Kenya’s ambassador to leave Khartoum and withdrew its own envoy out of Nairobi, after a Kenyan judge issued an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir, wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Darfur.

Such reports are alarming and may signal a start of a conflict. I am afraid the next thing we are likely to hear is, as it has happened before in the case of Ethiopia and Eritrea, diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Unless the African Union brings the two nations to the table to resolve outstanding issues the situation may deteriorate.

We often criticise the West for our woes. But we should have ourselves to blame for failure to resolve  conflicts at the continental level.
