Gicumbi’s agronomist, Jean Chrisostome Nzeyimana, said the district has, so far, dug terraces on over 200 hectares of land.
"These terraces have helped so much in reducing soil erosion, encouraging the district to terrace more land and increase production,” Nzeyimana said.
Speaking to The New Times, Rose Mukagahutu, one of the farmers in the area said her yields have increased following the terracing drives.
"Through trimming terraces, I have managed to buy a Friesian cow from which I get 24 litres of milk per day,” she said.
Most residents have seen their incomes increase after numerous agriculture policies and projects were implemented through the poverty eradication programme, VUP.
Gicumbi District is largely hilly.
