I read in The Sunday Times, November, 27, that at the just concluded inaugural African Trade Forum, African countries were urged to integrate more, to boost trade amongst themselves, in a bid to achieve intra Africa trade.

At the same time, news emerged that Uganda and Tanzania were opposed to the application by Sudan to join the East African Community (EAC) while Rwanda, Kenya and Burundi have no objection to Sudan joining the bloc.

In my view whether it is Sudan or South Sudan, none should be barred from joining the community. It can only boost our chances of improving trade and widening the market base.

While joining may present several problems to the community, the benefits of admitting them outweigh the disadvantages.

So, a message to the EAC Heads of States Summit: admit Sudan and the market will get bigger and the benefits will double.
