The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended authorities for the improved management of prisoners’ dossiers, noting that the digitalisation of judicial records had played a significant role in easing the process. On Wednesday, the chairperson of the commission, Sylvie Zainabu Kayitesi, presented the 2010/11 Human Rights report which indicated that the country has registered remarkable improvement in human rights protection.

On Wednesday, the chairperson of the commission, Sylvie Zainabu Kayitesi, presented the 2010/11 Human Rights report which indicated that the country has registered remarkable improvement in human rights protection.
"There were extremely very few complaints on delayed trials; this is because dossiers are now managed digitally, meaning it’s not possible for a dossier to disappear or delay,” said a NHRC Commissioner, Laurent Nkongoli.
He added that even the few reported cases only delayed for a few days.
Addressing a news conference Kayitesi noted that in the past one year, her commission mostly dwelt on educating the masses about their rights.
"Educating people about their rights is easing our work. When people know their rights, then no one can easily violate them.
"The results we get from these lessons we offer to people are impressive. That is why cases reported to us are reducing,” Kayitesi noted.
She disclosed that the commission worked on a total of 1,740 cases, 79.2 percent of which were resolved.
She noted that previously, the major cases recorded were land-related but which have since drastically gone down following the new land laws and registration processes.
