Prime Minister, Pierre Damien Habumuremyi, has appealed to King Faisal Hospital Kigali (KFH-K) to strive for excellence in service delivery to meet its ambitious quest of becoming a national and regional referral facility.

The Prime Minister toured the hospital yesterday to get a first-hand account of the operations of the hospital and collectively draw measures of ensuring that it meets its mission. 

"The government has set out a strong mission for this hospital, for which we must achieve,” Habumuremyi told the management.

According to the Premier, the first mission expected of the staff is delivery of high quality services, not only to Rwandans, but to the entire region, which he said, must be motivated by the kind of medical care offered at the hospital.

"For you to be able to achieve this, the first step is to ensure that your staff clearly understand the nature of the unique mandate expected of this hospital and collectively draw measures of fulfilling it,” the Prime Minister said. 

While recognising the significant strides already achieved by the hospital, Habumuremyi singled out four crucial areas he said needed greater attention: Excellence in service delivery, clear plan for capacity building of key staff, especially specialised doctors and nurses, introducing IT solutions in filing patient records and proper management of hospital resources. 

He tasked the Ministry of Health to provide a clear road-map for implementation of strategies aimed at meeting the above tasks, which he said should be discussed on quarterly basis at the Cabinet level. 

Acknowledging the new changes being introduced in the hospital, Habumuremyi also recommended a complete re-branding of the facility aimed at providing a true picture of what is taking place to counter the negative public perception. 

"After the tour, I fully recognise the good work being done. We only need to improve in certain areas and this is why you should think about re-branding your image,” he said.

KFH-K management informed the Premier of the changes being implemented, including their expansion plans, acquiring new equipment and introducing more specialised areas of medical care. 

The head of government pledged full government support towards these endeavours.
