The Japanese Government, through its Kigali embassy, yesterday handed a US$ 95,722 grant (approx. Rwf 57 million), to Collegne Doctrina Vitae Secondary School based in Gasabo District.

The money will be used to install a rainwater catchment facility to address water shortages that have dogged the school for long. 

"We had to reach out to the school because we all know how disastrous shortage of water is to sanitation - it leads to spread of diseases, if left to prevail,” Shigeru Kondo, the embassy’s Charge d’Affaires said.

Joseph Basabose, the school’s Director of Studies, said that that the facility would not only benefit students, but also the surrounding community. 

"We face a shortage of water because our school is located on a hill. This has affected the children’s studies; our neighbours face a similar problem,” Basabose observed.

"We believe this is a lasting solution to this scarcity, especially because rain is a more reliable source of water, and it can be stored”.
