The Ministry of Education has disclosed plans to change the mode of disbursing teachers’ bonuses.

The bonuses, normally issued after three months as part of the capitation grant fund, will now be added to the teachers’ monthly remuneration.

The development was announced, yesterday, by the State Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Mathias Harebamungu.

Capitation grant is money channeled to schools through districts to be used for renovations, staff training programmes and bonuses amounting to about Rwf 12,500 per month.

According to Harebamungu, the changes are mean to motivate teachers.

"It gives it more value and the salary becomes more reasonable once the bonus is included,” Harebamungu said, adding that the move is among the many plans in the pipeline to improve teachers’ welfare.

Speaking to The New Times, Florence Umugwaneza, a primary teacher in Kayonza District welcomed the move.

"We have always waited for three months to get our bonuses. It is good that we will be getting it every month,” she said.

Harebamungu also pointed out that delays in disbursement of salaries has been sorted out and teachers are now paid on time. He added that plans to put in place a proper promotion mechanism for teachers will also soon be announced.
