I read a story in The New Times, yesterday, about the protectionist nature of European policies that affect Africa. Rwandan exporters, just like their counterparts in other parts of the developing world are trying to capture a bigger market by exploring Europe.

Europeans continue to claim that they want to help Africa out of poverty. But, how can they do it if they don’t open up their markets for competition from African products?

Africa is a huge market for European products so I would expect Europe to be fair and reciprocate this gesture.

If indeed Europe genuinely desires to help Africa out of its poverty, then it should be willing to open up its markets for quality products from Africa. This, rather than aid, is the best way to help Africa.
