Rubavu-Muhanga (140km)

GASORE Hategeka and Abraham Ruhumuriza boosted their title aspirations with podium finishes in the fourth stage of the Tour of Rwanda.

The pair, riding for ‘Karisimbi’, finished second and third respectively. Hategeka clocked 4 hours, 18 minutes and 38 seconds, 13 seconds clear of Ruhumuriza, who is gunning for his fifth Tour of Rwanda title.

Hategeka, who climbed into second place following yesterday’s impressive run, hopes to build on that display starting with today’s 5th stage which covers 140km from Rubavu to Muhanga.

"In cycling, things can change very quickly. After stage three, I was languishing in 7th place but just one good stage changed everything,” the 20-year-old rider said.

Joseph Rosskopf of Team Type 1 won the grueling 151km stage after using 4 hours, 17 minutes and 51 seconds. The win propelled the American to the top of the general classification table with a combined time of 7 hours, 39 minutes and 33 seconds.

Kiel Reijnen, who dominated the first three stages, dropped to fourth place in the general classification, after yesterday’s fourth spot finish. The Team Type 1 rider struggled to come to terms with the hilly terrains after clocking 4 hours, 20 minutes and 55 seconds.

Adrien Niyonshuti was further back in sixth place after finishing three minutes and six seconds off the pace.

Other local riders who impressed yesterday included Karisimbi rookie Hadi Janvier who came in at 9th place and Nathan Byukusenge who finished 11th.

Two riders failed to finish the race.
